My friend is gay and her parents are being really hard on her about it. They tell her stuff like “it’s a phase” and “why would you choose that” and “it’s not healthy or normal.” She regrets coming out to them and she’s been getting more and more depressed lately. I’m worried about her…

Dear Friend,

Thank you for contacting us! You and your friend are in a very difficult position, but I am so happy that she has you to support her! There are several resources that may be helpful to you and your friend while she is going through this difficult time. One is an LGBTQ peer counseling hotline from the William Way Center at 215-732-8255 and another one for crisis intervention is called the Trevor Project 1-866-488-7386 (you can text, instant message or call). Another great resource is www.trevorspace.org. It’s a place for LGBTQ youth to connect with others. Another option you have is to look for a support group in your area that you two could go to. I know this is a scary and difficult time, and I want you to know there are lots of people who want to help! Your support of your friend is so important, and I commend you for looking out for her so well!

Please let us know if there is anything else we can help you with!

Ally
