I’m not gay, but I’ve been hearing a lot lately about LGBT bullying and suicides and it’s really heartbreaking to me. I don’t understand why people should go through so much just because of who they fall in love with. Hearing about these tragedies makes me want to do something to help. How can I get involved more to help LGBT people in my community?

Dear Jake,

Thank you so much for writing to us, we share your concern for the community, and it’s wonderful that there are allies out there like you who want to help make the world a safer and more accepting place!

There are a lot of ways you can get involved depending on where you live. Volunteering for PRIDE or OUTFEST events, local LGBTQ health and community centers and programs are all possible opportunities for reaching out to the community and showing your support. Check out the calendar of events section in your local papers, especially one that is targeted at LGBTQ individuals and communities.

If you have any trouble finding opportunities, you can also check out the resources on our Dear Ally webpage and contact the ones in your area to see what kind of opportunities there are to help out.

Thank you again for contacting us and for your commitment to being an LGBTQ ally!

Sincerely,

Ally
