Helping Heroes is a program that takes place at The Barbara and Harvey Brodsky Enrichment Center of JFCS in Bala Cynwyd, which focuses on enhancing life skills and healthy living. Adults living with disabilities, ages 20s to 50s, come together weekly to help those in need in the community. They make soups, casseroles and other dishes, sort for Our Closet – Powered by JFCS, a clothing assistance program — and help stock shelves in the Mitzvah Food Pantry.
On Monday, Sept. 18, Helping Heroes made honey cake for Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, and gave them to the heroes of the community — firemen/women, policemen/women and the staff at Lankenau hospital. JFCS clients made deliveries with a holiday card that included a message, “JFCS Helping Heroes are wishing our community’s helping heroes a sweet and healthy New Year.” Clients also wrote a personal message thanking the helping heroes for all they do for our community.
JFCS takes a holistic approach to support and help individuals with disabilities and their families in their quest to achieve stability, the highest level of independence, a sense of community, and an enhanced quality of life. We do this through providing therapeutic services, financial management resources, helping clients make healthy choices and develop peer relationships, cultural and educational group outings, holiday celebrations, independent living skills, and creating community.
The baking took place at- The Barbara and Harvey Brodsky Enrichment Center of JFCS, 345 Montgomery Avenue, Bala Cynwyd. The cakes were distributed at the Union Fire Station in Bala Cynwyd, Lower Merion Police Administration Building and Lankenau Hospital.
