Virtual event presents a master class in brisket and matzo ball soup.
PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Two Philadelphia celebrity chefs will be spending a day in the kitchen and over Zoom, where they will not only teach their techniques and take questions but also raise money for the community.
The cooking demonstration is part of the second annual JFCS (Jewish Family and Children’s Service) Nourishing Community event.
This year’s event features Yehuda Sichel, owner of the restaurant Huda in Center City and former executive chef of Abe Fisher, as well as Frank E. Olivieri, owner of Pat’s King of Steaks.
On Feb. 1, the chefs will cook brisket and matzo ball soup at Olivieri’s house for a virtual audience over Zoom.
The goal is to raise money for hunger relief, which JFCS contributes to in many ways.
“We provide supermarket gift cards. We also provide delivery weekly to people who are homebound and also provide them with recipes,” said Pia Eisenberg, JFCS senior vice president of community engagement.
The organization also supplies culturally appropriate food.
“For our Holocaust survivors, many of whom are from the former Soviet Union, we work with a supermarket net cost that provides groceries that are very specific to their culture,” she explained.
The event registration fee is a donation of your choosing — dubbed the “mitzvah menu.”
“The ‘entree’ is one of six different options,” said Eisenberg. “So $50 provides a fresh-cooked meal for a homebound older adult, all the way up to $3,600 supports our community food delivery at one of our JFCS In Your Neighborhood programs.”
